Veterinary surgeon
A veterinary surgeon was a doctor of animals, treating sick and injured horses, cattle and other livestock.
Veterinary surgeon is the older and British title for a veterinarian, a medical professional who treats the illnesses and injuries of animals and works on their breeding and health care.
Many countries now restrict the title to those with recognized qualifications and a license. In census returns compare farrier, a man who shod horses and cared for their hooves, and the hostler who tended them.
