Farrier

A farrier was a person who trimmed horses' hooves and fitted horseshoes, and sometimes treated sick horses.

Every working horse needed its hooves trimmed and its shoes replaced every few weeks. The farrier did this, and in earlier times often acted as a horse doctor as well.

A blacksmith could also shoe horses, and many did, but the farrier specialized in hoof care. Cavalry regiments in the Civil War had farriers on their rolls.
