Polish words in old records · card L

lat

Lat is Polish for "years" (of age); lat trzydzieści mający means "having thirty years," that is, thirty years old.

Lat is the genitive plural of lata, years, which serves as the plural of rok. In records it gives a person's age with mający or liczący, having or counting: lat trzydzieści mający, thirty years old. The ending follows the person, so a woman is lat ... mająca and several witnesses are lat ... mających.

Ages given by a declarant were not always exact, so compare several records before you settle on a birth year. Do not confuse lat with lato, summer: both words share the genitive plural form lat.
