listopad

Listopad is Polish for November; in a written date it appears as listopada, "of November," as in dnia drugiego listopada, on November 2.

Listopad is November, literally leaf-fall, from liść or list, leaf, and padać, to fall. In dates it takes the genitive form listopada: dnia drugiego listopada, on the second of November.

Because it begins with li-, listopada can be confused with lipca, July, when the ending is faded, and with lutego, February, in a quick hand. The length of the word helps: listopada is clearly longer. The Roman numeral for November is XI.

As seen in a recordDate of an entry in a Polish-language parish register, Russian Poland, 1857
dnia drugiego listopada tysiąc osiemset pięćdziesiątego siódmego roku
