Polish words in old records · card L

luty

Luty is Polish for February; in a written date it appears as lutego, "of February," as in dnia trzeciego lutego, on February 3.

Luty is February. Its name was originally an adjective meaning cold, severe or fierce, and like an adjective it takes the genitive ending -ego, so a date reads lutego, not the noun-style ending of the other months: dnia trzeciego lutego, on the third of February.

Lutego is easy to recognize once you know it, but a hurried hand can make it look like lipca or listopada at a glance, so check the first letters. The Roman numeral for February is II.
