Polish words in old records · card M

maj

Maj is Polish for May; in a written date it appears as maja, "of May," as in dnia piątego maja, on May 5.

Maj is May, borrowed from Latin Maius. In dates it takes the genitive form maja: dnia piątego maja, on the fifth of May. It is the shortest month name and easy to miss inside a long written-out date.

In cramped handwriting maja can look like marca, March; look for the j. Doubled dates such as dnia trzeciego/piętnastego maja give the Julian and then the Gregorian day. The Roman numeral for May is V.
