Polish words in old records · card M

marzec

Marzec is Polish for March; in a written date it appears as marca, "of March," as in dnia dwudziestego marca, on March 20.

Marzec is March, a name that came into Polish through German from the Roman month of Mars. In dates the genitive form marca is used: dnia dwudziestego trzeciego marca, on the twenty-third of March. The ending drops the -ze- of marzec, so marca can look like a different word.

Do not mix it up with maja, May, when the handwriting is cramped: marca has the letters r and c, maja has a j. The Roman numeral for March is III.
