Kwiecień is April, a name built on kwiat, flower. In dates it takes the genitive form kwietnia: dnia dziesiątego kwietnia, on the tenth of April. Notice that the c of kwiecień becomes t and the -ie- before ń drops out, so kwietnia does not look much like kwiecień.

In cramped handwriting kwietnia can be hard to tell from other long month names, so match the letters k, w and t. The Roman numeral for April is IV, which some clerks used instead of the name, as 10.IV.1845.
