Matka is the word for mother, and matki is the genitive, of the mother. In the narrative birth records of the 1800s the mother often appears through her husband, as z jego małżonki, from his wife, followed by her given name, her maiden name and her age.

Her maiden name is marked with z, from, as in Franciszka z Lisowskich, Franciszka née Lisowska. Watch for macocha, stepmother, and matka chrzestna, godmother, which are different people.
