Polish words in old records · card O

ojciec

Ojciec is Polish for "father"; in records it often appears as ojca, "of the father," because Polish changes the ending of the word.

Ojciec is the plain word for father. Like every Polish noun it changes form: ojca is the genitive, of the father, and ojcem is used after some prepositions. Ojciec zmarłego means father of the deceased.

In a birth record the father is usually the man who presented himself (stawił się) with the child, and he is named with his occupation, age and place of residence. Do not confuse ojciec with ojczym, stepfather, or with ojciec chrzestny, godfather.
