panna

Panna is Polish for an unmarried woman or maiden ("Miss"); in a marriage record it marks a bride marrying for the first time.

Panna means an unmarried woman and is also the title Miss. In a marriage entry the bride is called panna if she has never married and wdowa if she is a widow, so the word is a quick check on her history.

Panna młoda means the bride, and the old phrase Najświętsza Panna refers to the Virgin Mary, so read the context. The related word niezamężna also means unmarried woman. A bride's age and her parents usually follow the word panna in the entry.
