Latin in records · card V

virgo

Virgo is Latin for maiden, an unmarried young woman, and in marriage registers it marks a bride marrying for the first time.

Virgo means a maiden or unmarried young woman. In marriage entries the priest used it to show that the bride had not been married before, set against vidua for a widow.

It is a statement of marital status, not an age. A bride listed as virgo should be found under her maiden name in baptism records.
