vitricus

Vitricus is Latin for stepfather, the mother's later husband.

Vitricus means stepfather, the man a mother married after the child's father died. It shows up in marriage entries where a stepfather gives consent and in records of guardianship.

A child living with a vitricus may later use his surname, so check baptism records under both the father's and the stepfather's name.
