privignus

Privignus is Latin for stepson, and privigna for stepdaughter, the child of a spouse from an earlier marriage.

Privignus means stepson and privigna stepdaughter: the child of one's husband or wife by a previous marriage. It appears in burial entries, marriage records and household lists.

A privignus in the household tells you there was an earlier marriage, so look for the first spouse's burial and the child's baptism under the other surname.
