Polish words in old records · card Z

z domu

Z domu is Polish for "née," literally "from the house of": it introduces a married woman's maiden name.

Z domu means from the house and is the Polish way of giving a woman's birth surname, like English née. Its abbreviation is z d. It is a loan translation of Latin de domo.

In 19th-century records the shorter z alone is very common, with the surname in the genitive plural: Franciszka z Lisowskich means Franciszka née Lisowska. The surname also takes a feminine ending for a woman, so search for the base form as well as the form in the record.
