Polish words in old records · card S

styczeń

Styczeń is Polish for January; in a written date it appears in the genitive as stycznia, as in dnia piątego stycznia, on January 5.

Styczeń is January, the first month. In dates Polish puts the month in the genitive case, of January, so in records you almost always read stycznia, not styczeń: dnia dwunastego stycznia, on the twelfth of January. Month names are not capitalized in modern Polish, but old clerks often capitalized them.

Records near the start of a year may refer back to roku przeszłego, the previous year. In Russian Poland some dates are doubled, Julian then Gregorian, so 1 stycznia in the old style is 13 January in the new style during the 1800s.
