zmarły

Zmarły is Polish for "deceased" or "the dead person" (zmarła for a woman); it names who died, or marks a parent already dead.

Zmarły (feminine zmarła) works both as an adjective and as a noun, the deceased. In a death record it refers to the person who died. In other records it marks a parent who was no longer living, as in ojciec zmarłego, father of the deceased, where the ending -ego means of.

The past tense of the verb looks almost the same: zmarł, he died, and zmarła, she died. Umarł and umarła mean the same thing and appear just as often. Death records are called akta zejść or akta zgonów.
