Chargeable
Chargeable meant a person had become a cost to the town or county because they needed poor relief; such a person was called a town charge.
Poor law records use chargeable for anyone the town had to support. Overseers reported that someone became chargeable as a pauper, and warning out was aimed at newcomers who might become a town charge.
Indentures for poor children could bind out the children of parents who had become chargeable. When you see the word, look for the overseers' accounts of the same years.
