Niece
A niece is the daughter of your brother or sister, or of your husband's or wife's brother or sister.
A niece is a sibling's daughter. It also covers a spouse's sibling's daughter, so a niece in a will or census may come from the in-law side. The word came through French from a Latin word for granddaughter, and in Middle English niece could still mean a granddaughter.
The 1900 census instructions list niece among the sample answers for relationship to the head, and nieces living in an aunt's or uncle's household are easy to spot there.
