Uncle

An uncle is the brother of your father or mother, or the husband of your aunt; in some places Uncle was also a respectful title for an older man.

An uncle is a parent's brother, or by marriage a parent's sister's husband. The 1910 census instructions list uncle among the sample answers for relationship to the head.

Uncle was also used as a title of respect or affection for an older man who was not kin, especially in the Southern United States. A neighbor called Uncle Ned in a diary or newspaper may not be related at all. Check whether the record is using a family relationship or a courtesy title.
