Great-uncle

A great-uncle, also called a granduncle, is the brother of one of your grandparents, or the husband of a grandparent's sister.

A great-uncle is your parent's uncle: a brother of your grandmother or grandfather. The husband of a great-aunt is also called a great-uncle.

Granduncle and great-uncle mean exactly the same thing. The two forms are a common source of confusion, because grandnephew and great-nephew are also the same. The great or grand marks one generation beyond the plain uncle. His children are your parent's first cousins, so they are your first cousins once removed.
