änkling

Änkling (or änkeman, older enkling) is Swedish for "widower": a man whose wife has died.

Änkling and änkeman both mean widower. In older records they are spelled enkling and enkeman, abbreviated enkl. or E. A groom marked änkling in a marriage book had a first wife who died, so look in the death book for her and in the household roll for children of the first marriage.

Rolls sometimes mark children of the first marriage with phrases like b.i.1stg., barn i första giftet.
