Swedish words in old records · card O

oäkta

Oäkta means "illegitimate": a child born outside marriage. Swedish birth books mark such children oäkta, often abbreviated o.ä.

Oäkta barn was a legal category in Sweden until 1950. Birth entries for these children often give only the mother's name, and sometimes only her age, with the father left blank. Abbreviations include o.ä.s. (oäkta son) and o.ä.d. (oäkta dotter).

A child could become legitimate if the parents later married or were formally engaged. A child born to an engaged couple was not counted as oäkta, so watch for a later marriage of the mother.
