Learn the long s
Spend fifteen minutes on the long s, then find it in one old document from your own family and read the words again.
The long s looks like an f and turns 'Congress' into 'Congrefs'. Once you can see it, a whole class of older records becomes readable.
Your steps this week
- Work through the long s lesson and its practice questions.
- Do the double s lesson too, since the two often appear together.
- Find a record from before about 1820 in your files and look for words with ss or a mid-word s.
- Re-read any names or places you had transcribed with an f where an s belongs.
- Try today's record for a short daily practice.
