Find an ancestor on the voter rolls
Look for one ancestor in a voter register or poll book from a year between two censuses.
Voter records put a named adult in a specific precinct on a specific date. Some registers also give age, birthplace and where a man was naturalized, and after 1920 they can include women in their own names.
Your steps this week
- Search the FamilySearch catalog by place under voting registers, and check the state archives and county clerk.
- Note whether you have a register of qualified voters or a poll book from election day.
- Copy the name, the precinct or ward, the date, and any age, birthplace or address.
- Write down any naturalization court and date as a lead, and confirm it in the court's own records.
- For a woman, look in registers made after August 1920, or earlier if her state let women vote.
