The 1900 census occupation column was narrow, so the enumerator instructions listed twenty abbreviations that could be used there and no others. Agric. for agriculture is the first on the list.

It usually stands next to a word that tells the job, as in Salesman, Agric. implements. The same instructions told enumerators not to confuse a farmer, who ran a farm, with a farm laborer, who worked on one for wages, so check which of the two the line says.
