Mar
Mar in the marital status column of the 1950 census means married; earlier censuses wrote M.
The 1950 census used short codes for marital status: Mar for married, Wd for widowed, D for divorced, Sep for separated and Nev for never married. Children under 14 were reported as never married. The 1900, 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses wrote M for married, and 1910 wrote M1 or M2.
In 1950 a person who lived apart from a spouse without a divorce was supposed to be Sep, not Mar. In 1940, by contrast, separated persons were counted with the married.
