fol.
Fol. is short for folio, a numbered leaf of a record book; deed and court citations give the book and the folio.
Fol. stands for folio, a sheet or leaf in a book. Older record books were often numbered by leaf instead of by page, so folio 40 may cover both the front and the back of one sheet, sometimes marked 40r and 40v.
In a citation like Book B, fol. 40, the folio is the place to look inside the book. If the image does not match, check the facing page.
