N.H.

In a census birthplace column, N.H. is the abbreviation for New Hampshire.

N.H. is an older abbreviation of New Hampshire, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.

It is easy to confuse with N.J. or N.Y. in a hurried hand. Look at how the same enumerator wrote the second letter on other lines.
