N.Y.

In a census birthplace column, N.Y. is the abbreviation for New York.

N.Y. is an older abbreviation of New York, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.

Watch the letters closely: N.Y., N.J. and N.H. are easy to mix up in a hurried hand. Compare the second letter with the way the same enumerator wrote it on other lines.
