Conn.

In a census birthplace column, Conn. is the abbreviation for Connecticut.

Conn. is an older abbreviation of Connecticut, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.

Many families who moved into New York, Ohio and the Western Reserve after the Revolution show Conn. as the birthplace of the oldest generation.
