Vt.
In a census birthplace column, Vt. is the abbreviation for Vermont.
Vt. is an older abbreviation of Vermont, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.
Vermont joined the Union in 1791, and families who moved west from it often show Vt. as the birthplace of parents in Ohio, New York and Midwest census pages.
