rec'd
Rec'd is short for received, as in a receipt in an estate file: rec'd of the administrator ten dollars, my share.
Rec'd is a contraction of received. It begins countless receipts in probate files, where each heir signed a note saying what he or she had received from the estate.
Those small receipts matter. Signed by a daughter and her husband, they can prove her married name and that she was alive at that date.
