R.F.D.
R.F.D. means Rural Free Delivery, the postal service that brought mail to farm homes, as in R.F.D. No. 2 in an address.
R.F.D. stands for Rural Free Delivery, the Post Office program that began delivering mail to farm families in the late 1800s instead of making them fetch it from town. Addresses read R.F.D. No. 3, followed by the town of the post office.
The R.F.D. town is where the route started, not always where the family lived, so look at nearby townships too.
As seen in a recordAddress in a 1910s obituary
Mrs. Ella Price, R.F.D. 2, Salem, Ind.
