Secy.

Secy. means secretary, as in Secy., Insur. Co.; it was an approved abbreviation in the 1900 census occupation column.

Secy. for secretary is one of the twenty abbreviations allowed in the occupation column of the 1900 census. The word covered both an office worker who handled letters and records and an officer of a company or society.

The instructions asked that an official of a railroad, telegraph, express or other company be returned by his title, so Secy. is usually followed by the kind of firm, as in Secy., lumber Co. City directories use sec. in the same way.
