Surg.

Surg. in a military roster means surgeon, the regiment's doctor; Asst. Surg. was an assistant surgeon.

In Civil War rosters, the field and staff list names the regiment's surgeon and assistant surgeons, and roster keys shorten them to Surg. and Asst. Surg. They were medical officers, not ordinary soldiers.

Outside military records, surg. can also stand for surgery or surgical, so read the line around it. In a roster, Surg. after a name is the man's post as a medical officer.
