U.S.C.T.

U.S.C.T. stands for United States Colored Troops, the Union Army regiments of Black soldiers in the Civil War.

U.S.C.T. means United States Colored Troops, the Union regiments made up mainly of African American soldiers, organized from 1863. By 1865 there were about 175 regiments, roughly a tenth of the army.

For Black families, U.S.C.T. service can open a rich paper trail: compiled service records and pension files can name parents, wives and children.
