Hypertrophy of the heart

Hypertrophy of the heart meant overgrowth of the heart, its muscular wall grown too thick; it was counted among the organic diseases of the heart.

Webster's 1913 defines hypertrophy as overgrowth or excessive development of an organ or part, the opposite of atrophy. In the heart it means a thickened muscle wall.

The 1911 Census Bureau manual lists hypertrophy of heart under organic diseases of the heart, together with enlargement of heart and fatty degeneration of heart. On the record it names what the doctor found rather than what caused it.
