Organic heart disease
Organic heart disease meant heart disease of the valves, lining or muscle, set apart from functional heart disease; doctors were asked to name the exact kind.
Records and statistics of the time set organic heart disease against functional disease of the heart. IPUMS keeps the two apart: valvular disease and other organic heart disease in one code, functional diseases of the heart in another.
The 1911 Census Bureau manual titled one group organic diseases of the heart, covering chronic valvular disease, chronic endocarditis and fatty degeneration of the heart, and asked doctors to name the disease.
