Valvular disease of the heart
Valvular disease of the heart meant disease of the heart valves, which then leaked or worked badly; doctors were asked to prefer it to plain heart disease.
Webster's 1913 gives valvular disease as disease of the valves of the heart. Old certificates often read chronic valvular disease or valvular heart disease.
The 1911 Census Bureau manual put chronic valvular disease under organic diseases of the heart and asked doctors to name it rather than write heart disease. IPUMS groups valvular disease with fatty degeneration of the heart in one code.
