Endocarditis
Endocarditis is inflammation of the inner lining of the heart, usually the valves, most often from infection or after rheumatic disease.
The endocardium is the inner lining of the heart, and Webster's 1913 defines endocarditis as its inflammation. It usually involves the valves and can lead to heart failure or stroke.
The cause is usually a bacterial infection, and valves damaged by rheumatic disease raise the risk. IPUMS codes endocarditis with myocarditis in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
