Inflammation of the heart
Inflammation of the heart, or carditis, was an old diagnosis covering inflammation of the heart muscle, its lining or the sac around it.
Webster's 1913 defines carditis as inflammation of the muscular substance of the heart and sends readers to endocarditis and pericarditis for the lining and the sac. Wiktionary and modern medicine use carditis for inflammation of any or all parts of the heart.
On an old record the plain phrase may cover any part of the heart, so the related terms below help narrow it down.
