Myocarditis
Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle, which can cause chest pain, breathlessness, an irregular heartbeat and heart failure.
Wiktionary defines myocarditis as inflammation of the myocardium, the heart muscle. Problems can last from hours to months, and long inflammation can damage the heart for good.
IPUMS codes endocarditis and myocarditis together in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules. On a death record the word names the heart muscle as the trouble without saying what inflamed it.
