Inflammation of the stomach

Inflammation of the stomach was the plain English for gastritis, a diagnosis for vomiting, stomach pain and fever that covered several diseases.

Webster's 1913 defines gastritis as inflammation of the stomach, especially its lining. Symptoms include nausea, loss of appetite and pain in the upper belly.

IPUMS codes inflammation of the stomach and other diseases of the stomach together in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules. A fatal case could hide an ulcer, poisoning or a stomach infection, so read it as a symptom.
