Summer complaint

Summer complaint was a common name for diarrhea in hot weather, especially deadly to infants and toddlers and linked to spoiled milk and food.

Summer complaint meant an attack of diarrhea, often with vomiting, during the hot months. Adults could have it too, but it struck babies and young children hardest, and contaminated milk was a common suspect.

It was a description of symptoms, not one germ. Several bacterial infections could cause it. In children it overlaps with the term cholera infantum, and the two are often used for the same kind of death.
