Survivor of the Union or Confederate Army or Navy

In the 1910 census, UA, UN, CA or CN in the veterans column meant a survivor of the Union Army, Union Navy, Confederate Army or Confederate Navy.

The 1910 question was put to all men over 50 born in the United States and to foreign-born men who came before 1865. The enumerator wrote UA, UN, CA or CN and left the column blank for everyone else.

Because the 1890 population schedules are lost, this column is often the first census proof that an ancestor served. It is a pointer to pension and service records, not a record of service itself.
