Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes schedules
The DDD schedules (Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes) were 1880 forms with more detail on people marked insane, idiotic, deaf, blind, paupers or prisoners.
When the 1880 population schedule marked a person in one of these groups, the enumerator filled in a supplemental schedule that asked further questions about that person. The 1880 instructions stress that every blind, deaf and dumb, insane, idiotic or crippled person must be returned, even if the family denied it.
NARA notes that, unlike the earlier social statistics forms, these list people by name. They survive only for some states, often in state archives, and are worth checking if an ancestor was in an asylum, poorhouse or prison in 1880.
