Free white males

Free white males was the heading of the age columns in the 1790 to 1840 censuses, where each man and boy in a household was a tally, not a name.

Before 1850 only the head of the family was named. Everyone else was counted in columns: free white males and free white females by age group, then other free persons and slaves.

The age groups changed. In 1790 there were only two for males, 16 and upward and under 16; from 1800 to 1820 there were five, starting with under 10; in 1830 and 1840 they ran in five- and ten-year steps up to 100 and over. Matching the tallies to known children is how you test whether a household is your family.
