Married within the year

Married within the year was a census column, 1850 to 1890, marked for anyone who married in the twelve months before census day.

In 1850 the enumerator made a mark opposite each person married during the year before June 1. The question stayed through 1890, which asked yes or no for the census year, June 1, 1889, to May 31, 1890.

A mark narrows a marriage to a single year, often with the bride already listed under her new surname. Search county marriage records for that window. From 1900 the census instead asked the number of years married.
