Number of years of present marriage

Number of years of present marriage was a 1900 and 1910 census column giving how many full years a married person had been married to the current spouse.

The 1900 instructions asked it of every married person, writing 0 for those married within the census year. The 1910 instructions stress the present marriage: a woman married 10 years to a first husband and 3 to the current one is entered as 3.

Subtract from the census year to estimate a marriage date. If husband and wife give different numbers, or the oldest child is older than the marriage, a first marriage is likely.
